Shorten redirects and link to final destinations
Link directly to the final URL, consolidate permanent moves, and preserve temporary redirects for changes that are not permanent.

This topic needs page-specific changes. Follow the general steps below; no platform snippet is assumed.
Why this matters
Each server-side redirect adds another request and gives visitors and crawlers another step to follow. Redirects are useful for canonical hostnames, protocol upgrades, and moved pages; the goal is a clear destination, not eliminating every legitimate redirect.
Trace the full route
Check HTTP versus HTTPS, www versus apex, trailing slashes, and any legacy paths. Record each status and Location until the final successful response. Bare Audit observes the HTML-fetch redirect chain; browser-side navigation redirects are outside that check.
Update links to the destination
Change navigation, canonical tags, sitemaps, campaign links you control, and internal references so they point directly to the final URL. Retain redirects for outside links and bookmarks that still use the old address.
Choose redirect permanence deliberately
Use a temporary redirect while a move may be reversed. Use a permanent redirect only when the resource has genuinely moved. For non-GET requests where preserving method and body matters, understand the difference between 301/302 and 307/308 before configuring the rule.
Avoid loops and chains
Combine compatible host and path rules into one direct hop where your routing setup permits it. Test encoded paths, query strings, trailing slash behavior, and any application routes affected by a broad rule.
For your setup
Cloudflare
Redirect Rules can handle host or URL changes at the edge. Review rule order and matching expressions to avoid loops or shadowed rules; always test the final Location response.
Next.js
Use the routing or hosting layer that owns the redirect and distinguish permanent from temporary moves. Framework config cannot control redirects that an upstream proxy handles first.
WordPress
A plugin, web server, and CDN can each redirect. Keep one clear source of truth where practical and inspect the resulting chain after cache or plugin changes.
Check your work
- Request old and canonical URLs and follow the chain through to the final status.
- Confirm internal links and canonical metadata use the final destination.
- Check that temporary URLs are not accidentally made permanent.
- Test query strings and non-GET behavior where the route handles submitted data.
